Earlier in the day a peace statue at the United Nations World Heritage site of Swoyambhu in Kathmandu.

The statue was dedicated to the founder of GCS International, the late Dr Young Seek Choue, who proposed the UN promulgate the UN International Day of Peace in 1981 and the 1986 Year of Peace.

The peace statue text reads: "During the massive earthquake in April 2015 in Nepal, the World Taekwondo carried out an earthquake relief project in Nepal.

"That project acted as a pilot programme for the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, which was established in April 2016.

"Such initiatives and movements are closely following the spirit and philosophy of Dr Young Seek Choue's GCS Movement."

Nepal's National Taekwondo Academy has also been officially recognised as a regional training centre in a ceremony in Kathmandu.

As part of the centre's grand opening, World Taekwondo President Choue delivered a certificate of recognition to Nepal Taekwondo Association President Prakash Shumsher Rana.

"I strongly want this Nepal WT regional training centre to serve as a good educational training centre for taekwondo people not only in Nepal, but also in the South Asia region." Choue said.

The centre becomes the 12th regional World Taekwondo training centre.

The first one was designated in Beijing in 2008.
