Denmark's Ryder Cup winner Thorbjorn Olesen has been charged with sexual assault following an incident on a plane, according to police in London.

Metropolitan Police revealed the golfer has been charged with sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault, and is due appear in court in London on August 21.

The 29-year-old was arrested on July 29 after returning from the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis.

Olesen had finished joint 27th in the event after shooting 277 for the four rounds.

He has been suspended by the European Tour and will not be allowed to compete until the conclusion of his trial.

A police statement read: "A man has been charged in connection with an incident on an inbound flight to Heathrow Airport on Monday, July 29.

"Jacob Thorbjorn Olesen, 29, of Redcliffe Road, Kensington and Chelsea, was charged by postal requisition on Thursday, August 1 with sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault.

"He is due to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, August 21."

Olesen's lawyer claimed in a statement on Monday that the Danish player cooperated fully with the police during their investigation, but could not comment further while legal proceedings were ongoing.

Olesen made his Ryder Cup debut in Paris last year, beating Jordan Spieth in the final-day singles.
