The World Tenpin Bowling Championships for Women is set to be bigger than ever, as it gets underway in Las Vegas, United States.

Following the opening ceremony tonight, action will commence tomorrow with the first finals on Thursday (August 29) and competition concluding on Friday.

The 60-lane facility at the South Point Hotel Casino is hosting, and World Bowling hope the championships will reach a wider audience than ever before thanks to a new broadcast deal with online video service Dailymotion.

A total of 179 athletes from 34 nations will take part.

Hosts United States will again be aiming for top spot in the medal table and to extend their lead in the all-time standings.

As of 2017, the US have won 27 golds and 77 total medals in women's events, with South Korea second on 16 and 37 respectively.

American hopes this year will be led by world number one Danielle McEwan, while compatriot Liz Johnson is also eyeing medals.

Among the international hopefuls are Indonesia's Tannya Roumimper, Daria Pajak of Poland, and Colombian bowler Clara Guerrero, who with McEwan and Johnson make up the current women's world top five.
