Spain's Felix Sanchez has been named as the coach for the Qatari national Olympic football team.

Sanchez is already coach of the senior national team, having held the position since July 2017.

He replaces compatriot Albert Fernandez at the helm of the Olympic side.

The appointment has been made in the run-up to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship, due to take place in Thailand in January 2020.

The tournament is acting as a qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, with three places available.

Sanchez has an excellent track record with the Qatari football team at all levels.

He coached his side to victory at the 2014 AFC Under-19 Championships before securing a third place finish at the AFC Under-23 Championship in 2018.

Sanchez then helped Qatar's senior team win the 2019 AFC Asian Cup at the United Arab Emirates.

The men's football tournament at Tokyo 2020 will feature 16 teams in total, taking place in six Japanese cities.

Qatar are due to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
