Paralympics Australia thanked Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for the donation, made to the national governing body's "Game Appeal" programme.

The money will help support the Australian Paralympic team in the build-up to Tokyo 2020.

"The Queensland Government has a strong and proud history of supporting its Para-athletes and has always been a great supporter of our organisation," said Paralympics Australia chief executive Lynne Anderson.

"This funding will greatly assist with the Games planning, preparation and support for the athletes while in Tokyo."

Queensland athletes chosen to represent Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will also be given grants worth AUD$2,700 (£1,500/$1,800/€1,700), providing they meet certain criteria.

"I would also like to congratulate executive director Bennett King and his Queensland Academy of Sport team who are doing an excellent job in preparing Queensland athletes for selection in our Australian Paralympic Games Team for Tokyo, with the qualifying schedule well underway," added Anderson.

Australia finished fifth on the medals table at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro with a total of 81 medals, including 22 gold.

The country sent 176 athletes to Rio 2016, the largest contingent it has ever fielded at the Paralympic Games.
