Japan moved through to the second of the top two classification round groups, with all eight teams qualifying for the 2020 Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Joining Japan in Pool F will be South Korea, who also completed a 100 per cent preliminary record at the Azadi Sports Complex in the Iranian capital of Tehran as they beat Indonesia 3-0, and Chinese Taipei, who had won their previous two matches in Pool B.

The final team to have secured a place in Pool F is Pakistan, who beat Kuwait 3-1 their second game in Pool D today.

Hosts Iran lost their third and final preliminary round match in pool A, going down 3-1 to Australia, but their two previous wins were enough to take them through to Pool E, the other top qualifying group along with their victors today.

Completing the Pool E line-up is China, who finished Pool C with a flawless record following a 3-0 win over 2017 silver medallists Kazakhstan, and unseeded India, who followed up their own opening win over Kazakhstan with a 3-1 victory over Oman.

Tomorrow will be a rest day, after which the competition will resume both in the two top groups, and Pools G and H, where eight teams will contest the minor placings from ninth place downwards.

Meanwhile in the European Men’s Volleyball Championships, which are being staged for the first time across four countries – France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Slovenia, with Paris hosting the bronze- and gold-medal matches on September 28 and 29 – defending champions Russia had a day off today.

But the three wins they have already amassed had established them top of pool C, one of the four preliminary qualifying groups, where matches are being played at the Stožice Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The host team moved up to join them on three wins tonight after disposing of Turkey in straight sets.

Earlier in the day, Belarus beat Finland 3-2.

Germany, beaten by Russia in the 2017 final, have begun this tournament with two defeats in pool B, which is being played at Palais12 in Brussels.

Serbia, bronze medallists last time round, have won both their games, following up their opening 3-0 win over the silver medallists with a win by the same score over Slovakia tonight.

Meanwhile Belgium, beaten by Serbia in the 2017 bronze-medal match, top pool B having won their third game, 3-0 over Spain.

A 3-0 win over Portugal established France top of pool A - being played at Sud de France Arena in Montpellier - with three wins, level with Bulgaria and Italy, the latter of whom beat Romania 3-1 today.

Poland overtook The Netherlands at the top of pool D - being played jointly in Rotterdam and Amsterdam - by beating them 3-0, with the Czech Republic establishing itself in third place following a 3-0 win over Estonia.
