Ramil Guliyev has vowed to perform better at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships after claiming the men's 200 metres title at the Gloria Cup here.

The Turkish star won the Gloria Sports Arena race in 20.08sec for gold to a delighted home crowd, but he was visibly disappointed with his time, having targeted sub-20 seconds in the popular resort.

He said his legs felt good after the race though as his attention turns to Qatar and the World Championships, due to begin on September 27.

"Its a good time for now," Guliyev, a surprise winner of the world title at London two years ago, added.

"The race is coming, not the quickest, but I'm happy.

"The legs feel good and it was a good race.

"We'll get back to some training, look at the race more and be stronger for Doha."

Sergeii Smelyk of Ukraine clocked 20.36 to finish second as three-time European 100m champion Churandy Martina from The Netherlands grabbed bronze in 20.60.

Guliyev's victory topped off a successful night for Turkish athletes, with Selena Durna and Naceti Er also winning their events.

Durna threw 52.69 metres to claim the women's javelin title as Laura Whittingham of Britain collected silver with 50.97m.

Margaryta Dorozhon of Israel won the bronze medal with a 47.44m effort.

Er won the men's triple jump gold medal by the narrowest of margins.

A leap of 16.56m saw him win by just one centimetre as Azerbaijan's Nazim Babayev recorded a best jump of 16.55m.

Simo Lipsanen was only seven centimetres further adrift, finishing third with 16.48m.

Nadine Visser was expected to complete her Doha preparations here but the Dutch athlete withdrew from the 100m hurdles after a morning training session.

In her absence, the door was left open for Annamari Korte of Finland to take the title.

She held off Gréta Kerekes from Hungary to win in 13.28, with Kerekes just 0.06 seconds behind.

Hanna Plotitsyna from Ukraine finished third in 13.37.

Gloria Sports Arena chief executive Elif Özdemir was pleased with the final night of Gloria Cup action.

"The weather and other conditions were perfect for the Gloria Cup athletics today," she said.

"All the athletes were very happy and told us they will participate again next year.

"We will do our best to develop the race to the next level for the years to come."
