England's Sarah-Jane Perry is still on course for a hat-trick of Oracle NetSuite Open titles, as the world number seven cruised into the quarter-finals at the Bay Club, San Francisco.

Perry has a special relationship with this event, having triumphed in 2017 and 2018, and dominated compatriot Emily Whitlock in the second round, winning 11-6, 11-8.

It was the second meeting for the pair in three weeks, with Perry also coming out on top in the quarter-finals of the Open de France in Nantes.

Perry required just 18 minutes to dispose of Whitlock, who started well in the first set but couldn't maintain her form.

"She played really well a couple of weeks ago in Nantes," Perry said.

"I felt a little flat in that tournament, but I just tried to come out and play with a little bit of confidence.

"As both games went on, I started to find my way and my rhythm and momentum.

"Hopefully tomorrow I can actually start well and not wait until halfway through the game."

Next up for Perry in the last eight is world number one Raneem El Welily, in a repeat of last year's Oracle NetSuite Open final.

El Welily came from a game down to defeat American Olivia Blatchford Clyne, coming through 9-11, 11-5, 11-5.

In the men’s draw, unseeded German Raphael Kandra overcame compatriot and world number five, Simon Rösner, in the last match of the night at the University Club.

Kandra took a tight first set 11-9, then was more comfortable in the second at 11-7.

"I was trying to stay as mentally sharp as I could," Kandra said.

"With a maximum of three games, physically you can push yourself, but in my head I had to stay sharp and make the precise shots."

He now faces Egypt's Marwan ElShorbagy in the last eight.

There were also victories for Scotland's world number 44 Alan Clyne, over Englishman Declan James, and Tarek Momen, who was too strong for Mexico's Cesar Salazar.

Play now moves to the glass court in San Franciso's Embarcadero Plazo.
