World champion Irem Yaman of Turkey beat double Olympic champion Jade Jones of Great Britain in the women’s under-57 kilograms final on day two of the G4 Extra European Taekwondo Championships in Bari.

Yaman, winner of the 62kg title at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester in May, triumphed 22-9 at the Italian city's PalaFlorio.

She had earlier defeated Belgium’s Raheleh Asemani in the semi-finals.

Asemani was joined on the third step of the podium by Spain’s Marta Calvo Gómez, beaten by Jones in the other last-four encounter.

There were also gold medal-winning performances today from Spain’s Javier Pérez Polo and Russia’s Anton Kotkov.

Pérez Polo avenged his World Championships final loss to Britain’s Bradly Sinden, claiming the men’s under-68kg crown with a 19-11 victory.

Kotkov, meanwhile, overcame Croatia’s Toni Kanaet 11-1 in the men’s under-80kg final.

Russia’s Alexey Denisenko and Belgium’s Si Mohamed Ketbi were the under-68kg bronze medallists.

The under-80kg bronze medals went to Italy’s Simone Alessio and Ukraine’s Denys Voronovskyi.

With taekwondo dropped from the European Games programme after the inaugural edition in Baku in 2015, the event in Bari aims to compensate European athletes who would have otherwise missed out on the opportunity to collect ranking points for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.
