Canada's Cynthia Appiah claimed victory at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation monobob event in Lake Placid.

Appiah, a former shot putter and hammer thrower, clocked a combined time of 1min 57.65 sec at the Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex .

The 29-year-old was too quick for the rest of the field, finishing 0.58 seconds in front of nearest challenger Kim Yoo-ran of South Korea.

Kim completed her two runs in 1:58.23, 0.05 faster than Australia's Ashleigh Werner, who took bronze.

Melissa Lotholz of Canada ended the competition outside of the podium places with a time of 1:58.89.

The event in Lake Placid is one of eight women's monobob races due to be held this season.

Lillehammer, Königssee, Park City and La Plagne are all set to stage events before the women's monobob campaign concludes in Lake Placid in April.

The discipline will make its debut on the Olympic programme at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.
