Ndikumwenayo, a 22-year-old who finished ninth at this year's World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, broke away in the closing stages of the 10.06 kilometres 38th Cross Internacional de la Constitución race.

The Spanish-based African shook off Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko with 1,200 metres remaining having at one stage fallen behind him before getting back on level terms.

Ndikumwenayo crossed the line in 29min 23sec, with Ayeko four seconds behind.

His Burundi team-mate Rodrigue Kwizera finished third a further four seconds adrift. 

"This is my first success at a World Athletics event so I’m more than joyful," Ndikumwenayo said.

"I would like to compete at the World Indoors in Nanjing next March over 3,000m and then I’ll prepare to compete in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics."

Cherono beat Bahrain's Rose Chelimo to become the second woman to take back-to-back titles in the history of the event, joining Ethiopia’s Meselech Melkamu.

The 23-year-old Cherono was in dominant form in the 8km women's race, crossing the line in 27:10 - 21 seconds ahead of Chelimo. 

Portugal's Mariana Machado, the early leader, finished third. 

"I think today’s win has been much easier than last year’s when the circuit was really muddy," said Cherono. 

"I would like to make the Kenyan team [for the Olympics], but the standard is extremely high. 

"I still have to decide on whether I’ll pick the 5,000m or the 10,000m."
