Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho is set to be the guest of honour at the third edition of the Teqball World Championships, which begin here tomorrow.

Around 158 athletes representing 57 countries are expected to compete across singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

Ten more countries have been added to the draw from last year's event in the French city of Reims, with a 150 per cent increase of participants since the first edition in 2017.

Group stages are scheduled for tomorrow at Hungexpo, before the knockout competition and singles final takes place on Saturday (December 7) at the same venue.

The mixed doubles and doubles finals are scheduled for Sunday (December 8) at Vasas Sport Club.

Ronaldinho, member of the Brazilian FIFA World Cup-winning squad in 2002, will give a press conference tomorrow and play in an all stars game on Sunday.

The event aims to showcase what is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, which has already received official recognition from the Olympic Council of Asia and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.

"This is our biggest world championships yet and a direct reflection of the strong growth Teqball has enjoyed throughout the world over the last few years," said International Teqball Federation vice-president and co-founder Viktor Huszár.

"We’ve seen a growing competition calendar, an expanding fanbase and the ongoing development of strategic partnerships.

"We’re proud to bring the tournament back to Budapest, where it all began, to showcase our great city to competitors, coaches, technical officials and delegates, whilst also putting on an exciting competition for spectators."

Montenegro and Romania will be looking to defend their doubles and singles titles respectively, with strong competition from the home team of Hungary.

Djibouti, Argentina, Norway, Ivory Coast and the Cook Islands are all making their debuts.

A total prize pool of $150,000 (£114,000/€135,000) is available to the winners.
