The German Taekwondo Union has named Alexander Bachmann and Ela Aydin as their respective men's and women's athletes of the year.

Both have been honoured after coming out on top in a public vote.

The 25-year-old Bachmann received 35 per cent of the votes cast after a strong season in the 87 kilograms division.

The 2017 world champion climbed up to second in the World Taekwondo rankings after winning six medals at G1, G2 and G4 tournaments in 2019.

Bachmann's success means he has already qualified for this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Aydin won the women's prize with 45.14 per cent of the vote after a superb rise through the 49kg rankings.

She began the year in 121st place but now sits in 23rd, an improvement of 98 positions.

This is the biggest jump out of anyone in the rankings and comes thanks to seven medals at G1, G2 and G4 tournaments.

Other prizes were awarded to Demirhan Aydin, the coach of the year, and Anya Kiskkalt, named talent of the year.
