Jeanne Richard and Mathieu Garcia of France secured the Winter Youth Olympic Games gold medal in the single mixed relay biathlon race to delight the home crowd at Les Tuffes Nordic Centre.

In front of watching International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, Richard and Garcia dominated the event to clinch the co-hosts' second title at Lausanne 2020.

The French duo, who finished on the podium in the individual races yesterday, completed the course in a time of 42min 3.5sec.

Italy's Linda Zingerle and Marco Barale earned silver in 42:23.0, while Sweden's Sara and Oscar Andersson took bronze in 42:30.3.

Victory for Richard and Garcia saw them add to their medal tally at these Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Richard claimed silver in the women's 10 kilometres competition, while Garcia was forced to settle for bronze in men's 12.5km.

But their performance was golden today as they controlled the race on their way to finishing on top of the podium in their home country, the first co-host of the Youth Olympic Games.

"It was just amazing from the beginning," 17-year-old Garcia said.

"Jeanne did an amazing job and an amazing second turn by giving me the lead (at the final exchange), and I just finished the job.

"I knew I had to do a good shoot in the final round, especially in front of the French public.

"They helped me to focus.”

Richard said winning in France made their triumph extra special, adding: "We’re really happy to have been able to win medals on both days so far, and it’s even better that we did it in France."

Biathlon events resume on Tuesday (January 14) following a rest day tomorrow.
