San Antonio in Texas has been announced as host city of the 2020 United States of America Taekwondo National Championships (USATKD).

The tournament is scheduled for July 1 to 7, with the country's elite taekwondo athletes set to attend.

"Bringing the 2020 USATKD Nationals to the seventh largest city in the US is very exciting," said USA Taekwondo executive director Steve McNally.

"We are excited for our membership to take part of this year's Nationals where they can enjoy the city's rich history, downtown area, food, and culture."

"This year's nationals will definitely be one for the books, the state of Texas and the City of San Antonio will be great for families to visit and we know our membership will have a great week there.

"We are confident this year's Nationals will be incredible - one that our athletes, coaches and parents won't want to miss."

Competition will be held at the Alamodome Stadium, which has previously hosted American football, baseball and basketball teams.

"The Alamodome has gained momentum as a premier host for high-profile sporting events," said Alamodome general manager Steve Zito.

"Our city has proven itself as a prime sports centre, and we look forward to continuing in this outstanding tradition with the 2020 USA Taekwondo National Championships."

The USATKD Nationals have been held in San Antonio before, in 2015.

More than 4000 competitors and coaches participated in that event.
