China's Shi Yuqi beat Malaysia's Liew Daren in straight games today, to move a step closer to claiming the men's singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Masters in Bangkok.

The 2018 world silver medallist picked up a 21-15, 21-18 win on day three of the BWF World Tour Super 300 event at Indoor Stadium Huamark, putting him into the quarter-finals.

Next up for Shi, the second seed, is Indonesia's Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, who defeated Japan's Koki Watanabe 21-19, 21-15.

Also through to the last eight is third seed Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong, after he overcame China's Li Shifeng 21-15, 23-21.

Standing between him and a place in the semi-finals is South Korea's Heo Kwang-hee, who ousted seventh-seed Malaysian Lee Zii Jia with a 21-19, 15-21, 21-16 victory.

Two other seeded players were eliminated from the men's singles draw today.

Fourth seed Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan lost 15-21, 15-21 to compatriot Kenta Nishimoto, while eighth seed Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei lost 21-13, 12-21, 10-21 to China's Zhao Junpeng.

Nishimoto and Zhao will face each other in the quarter-finals.

In the women's singles, top seed Akane Yamaguchi is through to the quarter-finals after beating home player Phittayaporn Chaiwan 21-19, 21-10.

She will now meet Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who defeated another home player, Busanan Ongbamrungphan, 14-21, 21-11, 21-10.

Also through to the last eight is Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, the winner of her home event in 2016, having overcome Chinese Taipei's Pai Yu-po 21-13, 21-14.

Awaiting her is Japan's Aya Ohori, a 22-20, 9-21, 21-13 victor at the expense of Denmark's Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt.

Third seed An Se-young of South Korea and fourth seed Carolina Marín of Spain remain in contention for glory also.

An beat Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour 21-14, 21-14, while Marín defeated Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-11, 21-9.

Action in Bangkok continues tomorrow.

The finals are scheduled for Sunday (January 26).
