Mobile phone company Mascom has signed a sponsorship deal with the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC).

The link-up will help the country's athletes who are preparing for Tokyo 2020.

It comes at a key time for the BNOC after chief executive Tuelo Serufho announced in December that an absence of funding was likely to affect Olympic qualification deadlines for some sports.

A pledge of BWP200,000 (£14,000/$18,000/€16,000) has already been made by Mascom towards a fundraising dinner.

Dzene Makhwade-Seboni, the company's chief executive, said it would also lobby the public to donate towards Botswana's Olympic preparations.

This will include a text message number fans can use to pledge their support.

"As the leading network provider, we have the ambition to build onto this excitement and euphoria to propel Botswana sports," Makhwade-Seboni said to All Africa

The BNOC is hoping to raise BWP3.5 million (£250,000/$321,000/€290,000) to supplement the support it gets from the Government.

Its Diamond Athlete Programme provides funding for elite athletes who have the potential to compete at the Olympics.

BNOC President Colonel Botsang Tshenyego said the country had so far qualified three athletes for Tokyo 2020, all in track and field.

This includes the country's only Olympic medallist Nijel Amos, who won 800 metres silver at London 2012.

Botswana will now take part in Olympic qualifiers in various sports, Tshenyego said.

He added: "We are hopeful that we will qualify more athletes before the close of the qualification period."
