The draw for the inaugural Fed Cup Tennis Finals was held in Budapest today, with defending champions France placed into Group A alongside Russia and hosts and automatic qualifiers Hungary.

Twelve nations will compete in four groups of three teams at the revamped women's team tennis event, which is due to take place at the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena from April 14 to 19.

Australia, who qualified automatically for the finals as last year’s runners-up, have been drawn into Group B alongside Belarus and Belgium.

Group C is made up of the United States, the 18-time Fed Cup champions and number three seeds, as well as Spain and Slovakia.

Eleven-time champions Czech Republic, who received a wild card to the Fed Cup Finals and are seeded fourth, will take on Germany and Switzerland in Group D.

Fed Cup global ambassador Billie Jean King was joined on stage at Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts by eight Hungarian junior players, who each selected one of the balls from the Fed Cup trophy to complete the draw.

With France, Australia, the US and Czech Republic pre-assigned to Groups A to D respectively, nations seeded fifth to eighth were drawn into separate groups, before nations ranked ninth to 12th were drawn.

One team from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The winners of Group A and Group C will face off in the top of the bracket, and the winners of Group B and Group D will battle for the second spot in the final for the chance to be crowned Fed Cup champions in 2020.

The Fed Cup has followed the men's Davis Cup in moving to a one-week multi-nation event in a single city.

This year's edition will be the 58th in the competition's history.

Earlier today, the draw for the 2020 Fed Cup play-offs was made in London.

The losing nations from the Fed Cup qualifiers have each been drawn against an advancing nation from the regional Group I events.

It included two spaces for the nations advancing from the delayed Asia/Oceania Group I event that is now scheduled to be held in Dubai from March 3 to 7.

The event was delayed and the venue changed from China because of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

It was determined by the Fed Cup Committee that the two qualifier nations drawn against the teams from Asia/Oceania Group I will be guaranteed choice of ground to enable preparations for the ties to begin immediately.

The draw pits Brazil against Poland, Great Britain against Mexico, Canada against Serbia, Latvia against a nation from Asia/Oceania, Japan against Ukraine, Romania against Italy, Kazakhstan against Argentina, and The Netherlands against a nation from Asia/Oceania.

The Fed Cup play-offs are set to be played on April 17 and 18.
