Sweden’s Louise Lindstroem claimed gold in the women’s sprint competition at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in German town Oberwiesenthal.

Lindstroem was one of six skiers to progress through the early rounds of the sprint competition to advance to the final.

The Swedish skier triumphed in the 1.15 kilometre event, holding off the challenge of Poland’s Izabela Marcisz.

Switzerland’s Siri Wigger rounded off the podium places.

Wigger was one of the stars of last month's Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, when the 16-year-old earned two golds and one silver.

The men’s competition saw Ansgar Evensen celebrate victory, after triumphing in the 1.3km event.

Switzerland’s Valerio Grond and Germany’s Maxim Cervinka earned silver and bronze medals respectively.

The under-23 sprint competitions will take place tomorrow.

Athletes in the three disciplines of Nordic combined, cross-country skiing and ski jumping will fight for medals at the Championships.

Action in Oberwiesenthal is due to conclude on March 8.
