Canada’s Alannah Yip took her third and final chance to earn a quota place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with victory at the Pan American Sport Climbing Championships in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old from North Vancouver - the first female Canadian finalist in a World Cup event - had missed out on confirming a spot at the World Championships and the combined qualifier.

But she rose superbly to the challenge at a packed Sender One Climbing Gym in the combined sequence of disciplines - speed, bouldering and lead climbing - that will be the format when the sport makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo.

“I’m overwhelmed, so excited, so happy,” Yip told IFSC.

“I worked so hard to be here.

“For a couple of days it looked not great - I wasn’t able to pull it together mentally and physically, both in the pre-qualification and qualification round.

“But I eventually found the fire today.

“I get to go to Tokyo.”

She added a tribute to Canada’s multiple World Cup medallist Sean McColl, who has already qualified for Tokyo 2020.

“I’ve known Sean since I was born - we are family friends - and to be able to go to the Olympics with him means a lot to me.”

Yip finished the night with a score of 15, with Alejandra Contreras of Chile and Lauren Bair of the United States claiming silver and bronze respectively on scores of 36.

The final involved eight climbers and offered an Olympic quota place to the winner assuming their country had not already claimed their available quotas.

Qualifying spots for the host had already been secured before these Championships through the efforts of Brooke Raboutou and Kyra Condie, and with three US finalists this meant there were five climbers chasing the Olympic entry - Yip, Contreras, Ecuador’s Andrea Rojas, Valentina Aguado of Argentina and Yip’s compatriot Rebecca Frangos.

Rojas won the opening speed climbing, taking all three rounds to finish ahead of Aguado and Contreras.

But Yip, who finished fifth in the speed event, then dominated the bouldering section, becoming the only woman to find three tops.

She thus went into the concluding lead climbing at the top of the competition rankings, followed by Rojas and Contreras.

Entering the final round, the three athletes were separated by single-digit margins.

Rojas climbed first, achieving a score of 49+ which was overtaken by Contreras, who scored 52.

But Yip came through to secure victory with a closing effort of 53+.

Home climber Bair came through to claim bronze ahead of Rojas, who finished on 56 points.

The Championships conclude tomorrow with the men's combined final.
