Twelve manufacturers and designers have engaged with World Sailing in the process to choose equipment for the new offshore keelboat event, which will debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

It follows a request for information issued by the world governing body in December.

The new mixed-gender two person event will see boats race on a long-distance course over three or four days.

World Sailing say it will be the "longest and toughest of all Olympic sporting events" with the first boat over the line declared the winner.

Dehler 30 OD, Django 8s, FarEast 28 R, Figaro 3, J88 and J99 are among the manufacturers to have entered the process.

They are joined by J105, JPK1030, L30, Sunfast 3300, TEN2 and Vector6.5.

All 12 have provided information including production capacity, suitability for double-handed sailing and existing fleet sizes.

A 2024 offshore equipment working party has been tasked with considering the criteria for and evaluating the suitability of proposed equipment.

The criteria for equipment will be published no later than December 31 of this year, with the selected equipment due to be chosen by the end of 2023.

It is hoped the responses to the request for information will allow sailors to begin training and competing with equipment that is readily available in their countries.

On April 7, manufacturers and class associations will meet with the working party for further discussions.

Sailing at Paris 2024 will take place in Marseille, with an exact route for the keelboat event not yet decided.

The discipline will join kiteboarding, windsurfing, multihulls, singlehanded and doublehanded dinghies and skiffs at the Games in France.

Introducing a mixed event is part of efforts to ensure gender equality, with the men's finn class axed to make way.

Qualification events will take place on every continent and up to 20 countries will be on the start-line in Marseille.
