Delta Air Lines has signed-up as the inaugural founding partner of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

The airline has agreed to an eight-year partnership which will begin in 2021, and has also become a supporter of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

As part of the deal Delta will become the official airline of both LA 2028 and the USOPC, with Beijing 2022, Paris 2024 and Milan-Cortina 2026 also included in the arrangement.

It continues Delta's Olympic involvement after the company also sponsored the last two Games in the United States – Atlanta 1996 and Salt Lake City 2002.

A celebratory event to mark the tie-up was held at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles and coincided with the 95th anniversary of the airline.

LA 2028 chairman Casey Wasserman was in attendance alongside Tim Mapes, Delta's chief marketing and communications officer.

Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic champion in swimming and LA 2028's chief athlete officer, hosted the evening which featured a number of top American athletes.

This included 23-time Olympic swimming gold medallist Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time.

Six-time Olympic sprinting champion Allyson Felix, fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, triple Olympic beach volleyball champion Kerri Walsh Jennings and Paralympic swimming champion Mallory Weggemann were also on hand.

Delta's partnership will see them co-create the LA 2028 volunteer programme, which will involve more than 25,000 people.

They will also assist with the sustainability collective which will aim to reduce the environmental impact of both Games.

In addition, the deal includes an eight-year commitment to broadcaster NBCUniversal which will see multi-platform advertising both at the upcoming Games and in non-Olympic years.

"Delta embodies the spirit and strength of the Los Angeles Games, and we are proud they are taking this journey with us as an early and committed partner to the Olympic and Paralympic Movement," said Wasserman.

"Athletes from more than 200 nations and all corners of this country will descend on Los Angeles in just eight years.

"We embrace Delta's passion and dedication to connect all of these dreams and Olympic and Paralympic stories in the years to come."

The evening event included a preview of what a special LA 2028 Airbus A350 aircraft could look like once the partnership launches next year.

"Delta is in the business of connecting people, and nothing brings the world together quite like the Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Delta chief executive Ed Bastian.

"The dreams and big ideas born in Los Angeles inspire us to imagine a better future.

"Partnering with LA 28 is an investment in LA's future and a commitment to work together to create a more connected, equitable and sustainable world."

Delta has previously supported sport in the Californian city by partnering with major teams such as basketball side Los Angeles Lakers and ice hockey team Los Angeles Kings.

"Los Angeles is a global crossroads,  a city where everybody is welcome," said the city's Mayor Eric Garcetti.

"By bringing the world to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to the world, Delta is helping the City of Angels reach new heights."
