Three International Canoe Federation (ICF) Asian Championships that were scheduled to take place in Thailand later this month have been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The ICF has said it hopes to now hold all three between April 17 and 30.

The Canoe Slalom Asian Championships had been scheduled to begin on March 22 in Pattaya.

March 26 was the starting date for the Canoe Sprint Asian Olympic Qualifier, which was again to be held in Pattaya.

The Paracanoe Asian Championships were supposed to be held on March 26 in Pattaya.

"Organisers have responded to ongoing concern over the spread of the coronavirus and travel restrictions which are now being placed on some countries", read an ICF statement.

"Officials have also taken advice from international health experts.

"The ICF is continuing to monitor the international situation.

"The federation board is currently sitting in Barcelona and has agreed on contingency plans for the coming months, including for Olympic qualifying events, which will be released once ratified by the International Olympic Committee."

The coronavirus crisis is wreaking havoc on the sporting calendar, with sport including judo, water polo, sailing and football being forced to postpone or cancel Olympic qualifying events.

Globally, more than 106,000 cases of COVID-19 - to give it its World Health Organization title - have been confirmed.

Thailand has had 50 confirmed cases, although more than half of patients have now recovered.

Other Asian nations have been impacted on a far greater scale, none more so than China - where the outbreak originated - and travel restrictions are in place across much of the continent, which could prevent athletes from reaching Thailand.
