World Sailing and the Professional Squash Association (PSA) have both signed the United Nations Sport for Generation Equality Initiative.

The UN Women project commits signatories to six principles devoted to sporting gender equality.

Aims include promoting women's leadership in sports governance and responding to and preventing violence against women and girls in sport.

Closing the gap in investment in women's sport is another goal, as is promoting equal participation and bias-free representation in the media.

Supporting equal opportunities in sport is also among the principles, while signatories must annually report on their progress.

World Sailing have become the first Olympic-sport governing body to sign the initiative and have already introduced a new Gender Equality Charter.

"World Sailing welcomed the World Sailing Trust's report and its recommendations when it was released," said Kim Andersen, the President of World Sailing.

"Today is another positive step forward for World Sailing as we continue our commitment to supporting women in sailing, enhancing female participation and achieving gender equity."

The 2019-20 PSA Women's World Championship became the first edition in the sport's history to offer a prize purse higher than that of the Men's World Championship.

"We are proud to be one of the first signatories to the Sports for Generation Equality Initiative and look forward to working with UN Women and all other members of the initiative as we look to achieve the objectives outlined in the framework," said PSA Foundation Board Member Ashley Bernhard.

The International Olympic Committee are among other organisations who have signed the initiative.
