Douala has been selected to be the first host of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League final, under the new one-match format.

The previous format saw the finalists play home and away games to determine the winners of Africa’s elite club competition.

The first final of the competition did take place as a single match in Ghana back in 1965.

Every subsequent final saw two legs take place, with the aggregate score determining the overall result.

The conclusion of the 2019 tournament proved controversial, with Wydad Casablanca walking off in protest at an issue with the video assistant referee (VAR) system during the second leg of their match with Esperance.

Esperance were leading the second leg 1-0 at the time, with the first match having ended in a 1-1 draw.

Esperance were awarded the victory but were told by CAF that they must return their trophy and medals after its Executive Committee decided to overturn that outcome.

This decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled Wydad Casablanca had lost the second leg by abandoning the match.

The final will now be played at a neutral venue, with Douala’s newly constructed Japoma Stadium due to host tie on May 29.

Morocco’s Raja Casablanca face Zamalek of Egypt in the first semi-final, while Wydad Casablanca take on another Egyptian side in Al-Ahly.

The semi-finals are held over two legs.

The Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Stadium in Morocco’s capital Rabat will host to the final of the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup.

The match will take place on May 24.

Egyptian outfit Pyramids face Guinea’s Horoya in the first semi-final, while RS Berkane and Hassania Agadir contest an all-Moroccan last-four contest.

“The two cities got the nod following evaluation of the submitted bids taking into consideration key facilities such as infrastructure, accommodation, medical amongst others,” a CAF statement read.
