The announcement was made following the cancellation of the final qualifying tournaments because of the coronavirus outbreak, meaning the first stage of the Olympic qualification pathway was completed.

Places have been awarded to the four highest-ranked athletes per gender and Olympic event, who have claimed the 32 places allocated by standings.

Additionally, the WKF has also confirmed the Japanese athletes who will take the host nation quota places in each of the eight Olympic categories.

The athletes who qualified for one of the places allocated by standings are as follows:

Male Kata - Mattia Busato of Italy, Antonio Diaz of Venezuela, Damian Quintero of Spain and Ali Sofuoglu of Turkey.

Female Kata - Viviana Bottaro of Italy, Sakura Kokomai of the United States, Mo Sheung Grace Lau of Hong Kong, Sandra Sanchez of Spain.

Male Kumite -67 kilogrammes -  Darkhan Assadilov of Kazakhstan, Angelo Crescenzo of Italy, Steven Dacosta of France, Vinicius Figueira of Brazil.

Female Kumite -55kg - Sara Bahmanyar of Iran, Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu of Turkey, Anzhelika Terliuga of Ukraine and Tzu-Yun Wen of Chinese Taipei.

Male Kumite -75kg - Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan, Bahman Asgari Ghoncheh of Iran, Luigi Busa of Italy, Stanislav Horuna of Ukraine.

Male Kumite -61kg - Merve Coban of Turkey, Giana Lotfy of Egypt, Jovana Prekovic of Serbia, Xiaoyan Yin of China.

Male Kumite +75kg - Ugur Aktas of Turkey, Sajad Ganjzadeh of Iran, Jonathan Horne of Germany, Ivan Kvesic of Croatia.

Female Kumite +61kg - Hamideh Abbasali of Iran, Meltem Hocaouglu of Turkey, Elena Quirici of Switzerland, Irina Zaretska of Azerbaijan.

The host nation quota places have been awarded to the following Japanese athletes:

Ryo Kiyuna (Male Kata), Kiyou Shimizu (Female Kata), Naoto Sago (Male Kumite -67kg), Miho Miyahara (Female Kumite -55kg), Ken Nishimura (Male Kumite -75kg), Mayumi Someya (Male Kumite -61kg), Ryutaro Araga (Male Kumite +75kg), Ayumi Uekusa (Female Kumite +61kg).

The second half of the field of karatekas who participate in Tokyo 2020 will be determined in the coming months.

Twenty-four athletes are scheduled to earn their ticket to Tokyo at a qualification tournament, set to be held in Paris in France, from May 8 to 10.

A further 12 athletes will earn their berth at the Olympic Games by continental representation and up to four karatekas will clinch their place through the Tripartite Commission invitation places, which are awarded to athletes who are nominated by their National Olympic Committee.
