Asian Tour commissioner and chief executive Cho Minn Thant claimed the likelihood of the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place this year in Tokyo is "highly unlikely".

The golf official's comments came after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said there was no need for "any drastic decisions at this stage" regarding Tokyo 2020.

This is despite the ongoing coronavirus crisis, with more than 225,000 cases and 9,000 deaths reported worldwide.

Countries are subsequently taking extreme action to halt the spread, such as the cancellation and postponement of sporting events and lockdowns.

"I can understand why they would want to push forward with the Olympics," said Cho, as reported by Yahoo News

"There would be huge revenue ramifications on the economy of Japan.

"But it seems highly unlikely now in my opinion."

Cho also confirmed that all Asian Tour events were suspended until May, in line with the measures taken by the United States Professional Golf Association and European Tours.

He claimed this would have a negative impact on golfers trying to qualify for Tokyo 2020, with the Olympic rankings qualifying cut-off scheduled for June 22.

"Our plan initially was to have about 16 or 17 tournaments before the Olympic cut-off," Cho said.

"Today, we probably have only about four or five Asian Tour players eligible for the Olympics.

"Given the amount of golf that was left to be played, we were hopeful that more players from nations like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines would have the opportunity to get into the Olympics over the next two or three months.

"Obviously, that's not going to happen."

On current rankings, only Thailand's Jazz Janewattananond and Gunn Charoenkul, the Indian pair of Rashid Khan and Udayan Mane, and Miguel Tabuena of The Philippines, would represent the Asian Tour at Tokyo 2020.

The IOC has received criticism for their stance on the Games, with the lack of opportunity to qualify now one of the main concerns.

Golf was reintroduced to the Olympic programme for Rio 2016, making its first appearance at the Games since 1904.
