In a video message posted yesterday, President Matytsin described the pandemic as "difficult times for all of us" and urged athletes to "remain patient and calm."

Matytsin said: "As you know, the decision around the world is that all major sports, education and culture events have been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Keeping the safety of our athletes, officials, staff and public in mind FISU has also had to postpone or cancel many events scheduled for the near future.

"We know this is disappointing for the athletes and organising committees but it is also disappointing for us.

"Safety has to be our top priority.

"Currently FISU staff are working from home but we are making sure we keep the ball rolling.

"We are in constant touch with our member federations and future organising committees and we will keep you all informed about developments.

"I assure you that as soon as the situation normalises we will return with our activities.

"I hope the summer brings some hope and sport back into our lives.

"In the meantime, I urge you all to be patient and calm.

"Please follow the World Health Organization and your Government's guidelines for safety.

"As always, we remain grateful for your support and understanding."

The President's video message comes after the federation closed its headquarters at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland on March 13.

All employees were subsequently instructed to work from home because of COVID-19.

Despite there being no reported cases of coronavirus among FISU staff, the federation said it decided to close its headquarters in order to protect employees normally based at the university campus.

The FISU Secretariat has decided that all meetings at the FISU headquarters and all overseas visits are cancelled until April 15.
