International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission chair John Coates has claimed the organisation is working with International Federations (IFs) to potentially find a window in July and August next year to reschedule the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The dates for the re-arranged Olympics and Paralympics is expected to be the key topic discussed by the IOC and Tokyo 2020 following the postponement of the Games on Tuesday (March 24).

Taekwondo, like a number of other IFs, does not traditionally hold World Championships in Olympic years, but with Tokyo 2020 being pushed back to 2021, that is set to change as things stand. 

Chinese city Wuxi is due to host the 2021 World Taekwondo Championships and World Para-Taekwondo Championships, and although dates for the events have yet to be announced, they will now have to be worked around those chosen for the Olympics and Paralympics.

"Once these dates have been announced, World Taekwondo will of course assess any potential adjustments it needs to make to its competition calendar and make sure all athletes and stakeholders are informed as early as possible," a World Taekwondo spokesperson told insidethegames.

Several other sports adapt their calendars to accommodate the Olympics in Games years.

World Athletics is scheduled to hold its next World Championships in Eugene in the United States from August 6 to 15.

Despite this, the international governing body has revealed it may move its flagship event to 2022 to accommodate the Olympics.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) is in a similar predicament, with its World Championships set to take place from July 16 to August 1 in the Japanese city of Fukuoka.

FINA has also pledged to be flexible regarding the dates of its major event, but has ruled out the prospect of postponing the competition to 2022.

insidethegames understands a recommendation on the timing of Tokyo 2020 will likely be made to the IOC Executive Board by the end of April.
