Vizer says the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Japanese Government and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee have made a "wise decision" with their rescheduling.

It was announced yesterday that the Opening Ceremony will take place on July 23 next year, with the Games drawing to a close on August 8.

Judo is one of many sports to have had Olympic qualification heavily disrupted by cancellations and postponements stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, and Vizer said discussions had already begun on how to resolve such issues.

"The Executive of IJF have met and we are discussing all issues related to the next strategy, in cooperation with the IOC sport department and we will let you know soon as possible", Vizer revealed.

The IJF has already cancelled all events until April 30, with the Ekaterinburg Grand Slam in Russia, the Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia and the Antalya Grand Prix in Turkey all called off, and more are likely to follow as more than 41,000 people have now died of COVID-19.

Restrictions on travel and group gatherings - in place in many countries in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus - are additionally making it difficult for athletes to train.

"I hope that all of you are taking care of yourselves in this difficult period and as soon as it is finished we will restart our competitions and our activities", Vizer said.

"I want to express my solidarity and IJF’s solidarity to all countries and regions affected by the crisis."

Speaking in a video address, the President added that he hoped "all judoka in the world, with their family, are safe" and wished viewers well.
