Russian ice hockey team Admiral Vladivostok has withdrawn its application to compete in the 2020-2021 campaign of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The club withdrew from the KHL after the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports of Primorsky Krai decided to suspend funding for professional sports teams in the region, ordering that funds provided for Admiral's financing must be sent to the reserve fund of Primorye for activities to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Admiral Vladivostok will not close down and despite the senior's team withdrawal from competitive action, Admiral's junior team Typhoon is set to compete in the Paris-Match Junior Hockey League in 2020-2021.

Admiral say they hope to be in a position to compete in the KHL during the 2021-2022 campaign.

"We are sorry to announce that Admiral will be unable to take part in next season’s KHL Championship," said KHL President Alexei Morozov.

"Fans of the team should not worry: the club will continue.

"The situation with the on-going spread of COVID-19 is far from simple and, at the current time, it is not possible to assess the consequences of the pandemic.

"We tried to find ways to help Admiral compete next season, but the regional governor made this decision in response to the situation on the ground.

"Issues affecting players currently under contract with the club are under control and will be resolved.

"The KHL remains in contact with its member clubs, as well as federal and local Government officials.

"The league would ask everyone involved with hockey to avoid making hasty decisions in the face of this situation.

"We have the time and opportunity to work together to discuss all of these issues as they emerge and find solutions that offer the greatest benefit to all concerned – players, clubs and fans alike."

The Kontinental Hockey League is made up of four divisions of six teams the majority of whom are based in Russia.

There are five teams from outside Russia who are based in Latvia, Finland, Belarus, Kazakhstan and China.

Admiral Vladivostok competed in the Chernyshev Division last season, one of two divisions in the Eastern Conference, finishing bottom with 56 points from 62 regular season games.

The current KHL campaign was ended prematurely on March 25, midway through the playoffs, because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

There have been more than 4,000 reported cases of coronavirus in Russia, with 34 fatalities.
