The goggles were collected by the US team in Park City and Salt Lake City, and have been transported by plane to Santa Monica in California.

The goggles, which can be used as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), were flown on a Cirrus-SR 22 provided by Salt Lake City Aviation.

Piloting the plane were Nick Henderson-Williams and former pro baseball player Tyson Brummett, who are both flight instructors.

"It is a great opportunity for us to give back to the community," said Brummett, as reported by KSL TV.

"Everybody is kind of hurting right now, and any way that we can possibly help the doctors out is great."

Goggles for Docs is a programme across the US designed to get used or new goggles into the hands of healthcare workers who currently have no eye protection as they treat coronavirus patients in the US, the country with the highest number of cases globally.

More than 40,000 goggles have so far been donated and although the numbers needed are constantly changing as more requests come in, at the time of writing, requests for 2,700 further goggles had been received.

The scheme welcomes donations of ski-style goggles or lab goggles, however swim goggles are not permitted.

There are currently more than 200 drop off locations across the country, and more than 500 hospitals have received goggles through the scheme.
