World Lacrosse has re-named the 2020 Men's Under-19 World Championship to the 2021 World Lacrosse Men's Under-20 World Championship due to the postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new name means that those athletes who would not be under the age limit in 2021 will also be able to compete next year when the tournament comes to Limerick in Ireland.

It will now be scheduled for June 17 to 26, 2021, at the University of Limerick after the new date was announced by the World Lacrosse Board of Directors during its monthly call.

In March, the Board made the decision to postpone the Championship which was originally scheduled for July 9 to 18 this year.

Age eligibility will be raised one year, while the lower age will remain at 16-years-old.

National teams who want to take part in 2021, who had not originally entered for the 2020 event, will be considered by World Lacrosse.

Speaking of the decision, World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern called it "welcome good news" for lacrosse players globally.

"Today's announcement is welcome good news for lacrosse players around the world, as it is further confirmation of our intention to World Championship activity in 2021, with the safety of athletes and all participants as our number one priority," she said.

"This announcement would not be possible were it not for the unwavering commitment of the Limerick Organising Committee and its leader Michael Kennedy, to stage this event and to support competitive opportunities for athletes.

"We offer our heartfelt thanks to Michael, the University of Limerick and the event organising partners in Ireland."
