The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has raised a total of €1.94 million (£1.75 million/$2.2 million) at its charity auction to aid the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Its #RaceAgainstCOVID auction saw proceeds go to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) COVID-19 funds, aiming to help the most vulnerable in society and assist with providing vital equipment to hospitals.

The FIA Foundation had previously donated €1 million (£901,000/$1.13 million) to the cause, with nearly the other half coming from the auction alone.

One of the top sales was the McLaren MP4-24 show car, donated by McLaren, which was used to promote the constructor's 2009 season car.

It was raced by Finnish driver Heikki Kovaleinen and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton that year, and sold for £66,000 ($82,700/€73,200).

Other items to sell include the "Eau Rouge" bronze sculpture by Paul Oz, named after the famous elevated turns at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

It depicts the late Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna at a 60 per cent scale and is one of only 41 made in the world, representing the 41 wins in his Formula One career.

Senna notably said in 1993, a year before his untimely death at Imola: "If you take away Eau Rouge you take away the reason why I do this."

The piece sold for £48,000 ($60,100/€53,200), while Damon Hill's 1995 Renault Racing suit and helmet - in which he finished second in the Formula One season - fetched a total of £39,600 ($49,600/€43,900).

"Almost €2 million raised by the the #RaceAgainstCOVID online charity auction organised by the FIA and RM Sothebys to benefit the IFRC's global COVID-19 response: that's a substantial achievement," FIA President Jean Todt said.

"Thanks to all donators and bidders, notably the FIA Foundation, for their generous contributions.

"In addition to this auction, I remind that the partnership between FIA and IFRC against COVID-19 includes a preventive health support for the motorsport restart, and a reinforced cooperation between FIA Member Clubs and IFRC."

Other top sales included the 2012 Race of Champions car raced by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, who have 11 world titles between them.

Hamilton's Mercedes-AMG signed racing suit, gloves and boots was also a top five seller, while his fellow grid members, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, had their racing suits become a top ten seller.
