Multiple world champion Kreg Llewellyn, considered one of the greatest Canadian water skiers of all time, has died at the age of 52.

Llewellyn won seven individual World Championship medals and three team titles during his successful career in the sport.

The Canadian earned 18 Pan American medals, including seven golds.

Known for his innovative tricks, Llewellyn triumphed at the inaugural World Wakeboard Championships in Hawaii and held 11 national open records.

He won 24 Canadian National Open gold medals.

The International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation is among those to have paid tribute to Llewellyn.

The circumstances surrounding Llewellyn's death have not been revealed, but his brother Jaret said he had endured difficult times after suffering a head injury.

"Kreg was my hero and an inspiration to so many around the world," Jaret Llewellyn wrote on Facebook.

"Anyone who had the privilege to know Kreg could see he had a huge heart, because he wore it on his sleeve.

"Kreg will always be the most talented athlete I have ever seen, not only on the water but in any sport, you asked him to try.

"During the height of the professional tour, Kreg was the most dominant male multi-event skier.

"He could do anything he set his mind to."
