Innsbruck 1976 ice hockey gold medallist Alexander Gusev has died at the age of 73, it has been announced.

Gusev’s death was confirmed by CSKA Moscow, who he represented from 1967 to 1978.

Gusev was a member of the Soviet Union squad which dominated men’s ice hockey competition at Innsbruck 1976.

The Soviet Union team won each of their matches at the tournament.

Gusev won two World Championships in 1973 and 1974, as well as securing the European title in 1973.

His international career came to an end in 1977, after the Soviet Union were only able to secure bronze at the World Championships.

Gusev helped CSKA Moscow to seven Soviet titles and three Soviet Cup triumphs during his career.

He later spent five seasons on the coaching staff at SKA MVO Kalinin.

An rememberance event was held yesterday in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was among those to send messages of remembrance to the event.

“Alexander Vladimirovich Gusev, a representative of the illustrious generation of our athletes, has passed away, whose victories have ensured the world recognition of Russian hockey,” Putin’s message read.

“Speaking for the national team of the country, CSKA Moscow, Alexander earned the love of fans, the respect of teammates and rivals, did a lot to support hockey veterans and talented youth.

“The bright memory of Alexander Gusev will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends, everyone who knew and appreciated this bright man.”
