The World Squash Federation (WSF) has welcomed the announcement that ‘A Bronx Tale’ - a film directed by SquashSkills - has been nominated for the Peace and Sport Documentary Prize.

The documentary highlights the story of CitySquash, which aims to use the power of sport to enrich the lives of children in one of New York City’s poorest boroughs, the Bronx.

It shows how CitySquash, a founding member of the Squash and Education Alliance (SEA), aims to help children to achieve both their athletic and academic potential.

Coach Bryan Patterson, who has committed his life to helping children, features in the documentary alongside SEA executive director Tim Wyant.

First-hand accounts from children participating in the programme also feature in the film, one of three to have been nominated for the Peace and Sport Documentary prize.

The winner is scheduled to be announced at the Sportel Awards Ceremony, due to take place in Monaco on October 27.

"This is fantastic news and on behalf of the WSF I would like to thank SquashSkills for their hard work in bringing this incredible story to life as well as CitySquash and the Squash and Education Alliance for the amazing work they do," said WSF chief executive William Louis-Marie.

"This nomination not only demonstrates the value of our sport which is already recognised as one of the most entertaining racquet sports in the world but also the way it positively influences the lives of thousands of kids in many countries all over the world."

It is the second time in four years that a squash documentary has been recognised by Peace and Sport.

The film ‘The Girl Unbound: The War to be Her’, which featured Pakistan squash player Maria Toorpakai, won the award in 2017.

SquashSkills founder and chief executive Jethro Binns welcomed the news that the documentary has been shortlisted for the prize.

The film can be viewed on the SquashSkills website here.

SquashSkills has also said the organisation will donate five memberships to urban programmes for each one purchased on its website.
