Ananias Shikongo_28-10-11October 27 - Disability Sports Namibia (DSN) has received a significant funding boost with N$600,000 (£48,000/€78,000) donated by Namibian utilities provider NamPower to help their preparations for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The umbrella body of Namibian Paralympic and Special Olympic sport, also received N$50,000 (£4,000/$6,500) from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF)

The announcement of the sponsorship was made at a NamPower Convention Centre last week, with MVAF chief executive Jerry Muadinohamba calling on the corporate world to follow their lead and lend their support to the country's Paralympians.

Benefiting from the funding will be sprinters Ananias Shikongo (pictured), Johanna Benson and Martin Aloisius, as well as shot put and discus star Reginald Benade, powerlifter Ruben Soroseb and wheelchair marathon competitor Frans Paulus.

The six are the only Namibians to have booked a place at London to date.

DSN will hope that Shikongo can build on his gold medal at the All Africa Games earlier this year, while Aloisius' bronze medal at the same competition will give him optimism ahead of next year's Games in London.

Namibia made its Paralympic debut at Barcelona in 1992 but then did not compete again until Athens 2004.

They won their first medal at Beijing in 2008 when Reginald Benade won a bronze medal in F35-36 discus.
