Simon Yates triumphed in stage five of the Tirreno-Adriatico to take the overall lead of the race in Italy.

The Briton finished the 202-kilometre queen stage from Norcia to Sarnano-Sassotetto in 5 hours 30min 43sec.

He broke clear of his competitors with 4km to go, crossing the line 35 seconds in front of compatriot Geraint Thomas and Rafał Majka of Poland.

Yates, who rides with Mitchelton-Scott, now has the overall lead.

"A really good day, great job from all the team, we wanted to take the jersey and get some time on the other riders, a great day for us," he said.

"Now we have to defend the jersey, for the moment I want to enjoy this moment."

Majka is 16 seconds off the pace, with Thomas 29 seconds from top spot.

Yesterday's leader, Canada’s Michael Woods, finished 11th to fall down the general classification.

Competition is due to continue with stage six tomorrow.

Participants will complete a 175km route from Castelfidardo to Senigallia.
