Brisbane has been announced as the host of the 2021 Nitro World Games with freestyle motocross, BMX, skateboarding and scooter events set to take place at Suncorp Stadium next October.

The Nitro World Games was developed by Nitro Circus and action sports star Travis Pastrana, with the event launching in 2016.

The event has been billed as featuring big air formats, breakthrough ramp technology and innovative judging criteria.

Nitro Circus has agreed to hold the event in the Australian city next year in partnership with the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane City Council through Brisbane Economic Development Agency.

The Games will take place at Suncorp Stadium from October 23 to 24.

"Nitro World Games is all about the innovation, big air and the progression of action sports," said Pastrana.

"We’ve brought in the best in the business to give athletes a platform to their skills to the next level – safely – and attempt tricks never seen before.

"Now we can’t wait to bring Nitro World Games to Australia, where action sports is such an important part of the culture and some of its biggest legends call home."

Organisers say they are working with a handful of athletes on new course designs, which they say will further push the boundaries of what has been seen before in global competition.

The Nitro World Games was due to expand internationally this year, following its establishment in the United States.

This year’s event was due to take place in Wales, but was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has welcomed securing hosting rights for next year’s Nitro World Games, suggesting the event will help with the economic recovery after coronavirus.

"Staging exclusive major events such as the Nitro World Games is a key part of our plan to drive Brisbane’s economic recovery," Schrinner said.

"The event will broadcast Brisbane to global audiences and attract thousands of visitors to support local jobs across our tourism, accommodation, hospitality, retail and service sectors.

"We can’t wait for world’s action sport athletes and fans to discover why Brisbane is the urban adventure capital of Australia."

The event has been awarded to Queensland at a time when the region is eyeing hosting the 2032 Olympic Games.

Queensland's bid, which centres on Brisbane, is currently on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic which forced much of the world into lockdown.

The Australian bid has been considered the frontrunner.

Germany, Qatar, India and Indonesia are among the other contenders, but hopes for a historic joint bid between North and South Korea look to be at an end as relations deteriorate between the two neighbours.
