Bryson DeChambeau won his first major title as he triumphed by six shots at the US Open at Winged Foot in New York.

The American, who started the day two shots behind overnight leader and compatriot Matthew Wolff, carded a final round of 67 to finish at six under par.

DeChambeau was the only player to finish with a total under par score and the only player to card a round under par on the final day.

DeChambeau shot 33 on the front nine, which featured a birdie on the fourth and a bogey on the eighth.

After the dropped shot on the eighth, he bounced back with an eagle on the ninth.

DeChambeau made a birdie on the 11th and parred the rest of the back nine as he comfortably clinched his first major title.

Second place in the championship went to overnight leader Wolff who carded a five over par round of 75 to conclude at level par for the tournament.

Wolff's round featured five bogeys, plus a double bogey on the 16th hole.

The top end of the leaderboard was dominated by players from the United States, with South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen breaking the American monopoly as he finished in third place overall at two over par.

Fourth place went to American Harris English at three over par, with compatriot Xander Schauffele in fifth at four over par.

Finishing in a tie for sixth place at five over par were two more Americans Dustin Johnson and Will Zalatoris.

The top ten was rounded off by a five-way tie for eighth place at six over par, between Americans Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas, Zach Johnson and Tony Finau and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.

DeChambeau's success at the US Open comes a month after his previous best finish at a major when he tied for fourth at the US PGA Championship at Harding Park.

His victory at Winged Foot makes him the third player after Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to complete the treble of a National Collegiate Athletic Association individual title, US amateur title and US Open title.

Speaking after his victory, DeChambeau said: "It's just an honour, it has been a lot of hard work.

"At hole nine that was when I first thought this could be a reality.

"I made an eagle, I had shocked myself to do that, and I thought 'I can do it'.

"Then I said 'no, you have to focus on each and every hole'.

"Throughout the back nine I kept saying 'no, you still have three, four, five holes to go.'

"I had to keep focused and make sure I executed each shot the best I could do."
