The Netherlands' two-time Olympic speed skating champion Kjeld Nuis has caused the closure of a training camp after he returned a positive test for COVID-19.

Taking place in Inzell in Germany, Dutch skaters were forced to abandon plans to train, with the ice rink closing down yesterday due to the potential spread of infection.

"I'm fine, I just don't feel 100 per cent," Nuis told Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

"But really sick?

"No, not that."

The top speed skaters from The Netherlands had been in the Bavarian municipality for almost a week as part of their preparations for the upcoming season, scheduled to start at the end of October.

Everyone else at the facility was tested and returned a negative test.

Reportedly, Nuis trained on his bicycle in the rain and reported on Tuesday (October 6) to his physiotherapist that he was suffering from a mild cold.

He was asked to take another test and self-isolated, as the guidelines from the Dutch Olympic Committee*Dutch Sports Federation suggest.

"I was shocked, I never expected this to be it," Nuis added when he found that he had tested positive.

"It is that I am an athlete and I have to be very fit to work, if I had worked in the office, I would have just gone.

"If you have minor complaints, get tested immediately.

"Before you know it, you will infect everyone around you."

During his time at the camp, he only completed one session on the ice.

Earlier this week, two German skaters from a different hotel using the same ice also tested positive which led to the closure of the facility.

Nuis, his coach Gerard van Velde and his physiotherapist are expected to leave Inzell today, days after his team-mates travelled back to The Netherlands.

"Kjeld has to be completely fit again before he sits alone in the car for eight hours," stated team manager Henk Schra.

"Friday and Monday we will do a new coronavirus test for everyone."

Nuis' team-mates are quarantining back home.

Nuis etched his name in Olympic history when he won the double in the men's 1,000 and 1,500 metres at Pyeongchang 2018, making him a double-Olympic champion.
