German city Duisburg is to host the re-arranged World ParaVolley Men’s Paralympic Qualifier, which is planned for February next year.

The event was due to be held in Edmond in Oklahoma in March, but the coronavirus pandemic meant those plans had to be scrapped.

Instead, World ParaVolley hopes the health situation will allow for Duisburg to stage the Tokyo 2020 qualifier from February 15 to 19 in 2021.

Germany - now the host nation - are one of seven teams it is hoped will compete for the final Paralympic berth.

The United States, Canada, Ukraine, Croatia, Latvia and Kazakhstan are all eligible to enter as well.

"We are not only looking forward to organising the qualification tournament in the province of North Rhine-Westphalia, a place big in sitting volleyball, we also see a great sporting opportunity," National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Germany President Friedhelm Julius Beucher said.

"Our team has the clear goal of securing the last slot for the Paralympics in Tokyo on home soil and with that realising their dream of participating in the Games.

"We will do everything in our preparations to ensure the best conditions and to be a good host, especially in these difficult times.

"In doing so, we also want to send a signal and spread confidence regarding staging sports events."

Hosts Japan, world champions Iran, China, Russia, Brazil, Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina have already qualified for Tokyo 2020.

World ParaVolley President Barry Couzner said he was "very confident that NPC Germany will deliver a fantastic event for the teams that is well-run and safe".

Germany has earned praise from many for its response to the coronavirus pandemic in comparison to other European nations.

"The major outcome will be that the final men’s team will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games - and this will be based on merit," Couzner added.
