Men's top seed Ali Farag reached the final of the CIB Egyptian Open with victory over compatriot Mostafa Asal ©PSA World Tour

Ali Farag and Nouran Gohar, the top seeds in the men's and women's competitions respectively, booked their places in the finals on an epic night for Egyptian squash at the latest Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour event in Cairo.

The last four line-up in both competitions was comprised of players exclusively from the host country, meaning a great night was in prospect for the home nation at the New Giza Sporting Club.

In the men's event top seed Farag was favourite heading into his match against unseeded compatriot Mostafa Asal.

Farag duly triumphed on the Glass Court as he won 11-3, 11-7, 12-14, 11-4 against Asal.

The top seed will now face third seed Tarek Momen in the final, with Momen going the distance for the second night in a row as he overhauled sixth seed Marwan ElShorbagy in five games.

In an epic encounter, which finished at just after 11.40pm local time, Momen triumphed 5-11, 11-6, 3-11, 13-11, 11-6.

In the women's competition, the top two seeds both progressed in four games to set up an exciting showdown in the final tomorrow (Saturday).

Top seed Gohar triumphed against sixth seed Hania El Hammamy despite losing the first game as she won 9-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-4.

Meanwhile, second seed Nour El Sherbini overcame fourth seed Nour El Tayeb 11-6, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8.

The CIB Egyptian Open is a PSA World Tour Platinum event and the PSA today announced that another event of equal status, the Qatar Classic, will take place as scheduled from November 1 to 7 in Doha, Qatar.

At the same time the PSA announced that the El Gouna International and Everbright Sun Hung Kai Hong Kong Open, which were both on the provisional calendar for November and December, would not go ahead due to complications arising from the coronavirus pandemic.
