Three candidates are set to contest the election to succeed Frits Vrijlandt as President of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) during the organisation's virtual General Assembly tomorrow.

UIAA treasurer Peter Muir of Canada, Safety Commission President Amit Chowdhury of India and Hungary's Peter Farkas are vying for the top job at the worldwide body.

Members of the UIAA will vote for their preferred candidate remotely as the meeting is taking place as an online event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Vrijlandt is stepping down as UIAA President as he has served the maximum of two four-year terms.

Muir, a former UIAA secretary general, sits on the body's ruling Executive Board, while Farkas served as vice-president from 2012 to 2018 and leads the Mountaineering Commission.

Chowdhury is a member of the UIAA Management Committee and has been chair of the Safety Commission since 2017.

All three candidates will have the chance to pitch their respective manifesto and vision to the membership during a virtual town hall meeting later today.

Chowdhury is also running for a place on the Executive Board, alongside Hélène Denis of France, Switzerland's Françoise Jaquet, Martin Lascano of Argentina and China's Wang Yongfeng.

Wang and Denis are both standing for re-election.

The UIAA's financial report and strategic plan will also be discussed during the General Assembly.
