The event was held both online and offline and aims to promote better relations between North and South Korea – the two bordering nations which have often been locked in conflict and are separated by the demilitarized zone or DMZ.

Seoul-based social organisation GCS International, which is also headed by Choue, organised the festival with the Kukmin Ilbo newspaper.

Only 50 people were able to attend in person at the Kukmin Ilbo Convention Hall due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the event was streamed live on YouTube.

Choue and Kukmin Ilbo President Byun Jae-woon were joined by Master Jeong Soon-cheon of Canada, who attended as a member of the Public Relations Committee of the North Korea-led International Taekwondo Federation (ITF).

As part of the festival, a video showing a joint demonstration from World Taekwondo and the ITF was shown.

"The DMZ Peace Festival aims to help enhance the awareness of world peace, thus helping create an amicable atmosphere for a unified Korea," said Choue.

"In this regard, the 2020 DMZ Peace Festival has a special meaning in that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War.

"In times of the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we should cooperate for the promotion of world peace as a global common society transcending differences in race, religion, ideology and nationality.

"I wish through this DMZ Peace Festival, peace messages should be further sent across to the whole world beyond the Korean Peninsula."
