Ajla Del Ponte secured the top honour at the Swiss Students Sports Awards after winning two medals at last year’s Summer World University Games.

The 24-year-old sprinter won silver in the women’s 100 metres and gold in the 4x100m relay at the Games in Naples.

Her successes saw her win the Swiss Students Sports Award 2020 at a recent ceremony in Lucerne - the host city for the postponed 2021 Winter World University Games.

Del Ponte was unable to collect her prize in person due to coronavirus restrictions.

Renato Maggi, head of Switzerland's delegation for Naples 2019, described Del Ponte as a "role model for many other athletes" in Switzerland and an "outstanding example for a dual career" as she combines elite sport with studying.

An honorary prize was also awarded to heptathlete Caroline Agnou, a bronze medallist at Naples 2019.

All the medal winners in rowing and orienteering at the 2019 European Universities Championships were honoured at the ceremony.

Daniel Studer, responsible for all the European University Sports Federation (EUSA) events at Swiss University Sports, reported that students from various Swiss universities won medals in orienteering, badminton, kickboxing, rowing, golf and taekwondo.

Dancing and singer also featured as part of the event's entertainment.
