Panam Sports has claimed organisers of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago are "working enthusiastically" to deliver the greatest edition of the event to coincide with three years to go until the Opening Ceremony.

The Games in the Chilean capital are due to open at Julio Martinez Pradanos National Stadium on October 20 2023, following the conclusion of the Torch Relay.

Nearly 7,000 athletes are expected to compete at Santiago 2023, which is set to offer a record number of qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Events in more than 20 disciplines at the 2019 Pan American Games formed part of the qualification process for Tokyo 2020, pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Panam Sports claimed the figure will be surpassed at Santiago 2023, but the continental body has not yet revealed any exact numbers.

Ten new facilities are being built for the 2023 Pan American Games, the first edition of the continental multi-sport event to be held in Chile.

A further six will be refurbished before the Games open.

Panam Sports will be keeping a close eye on progress as the building of venues proved a concern in the build-up to Lima 2019.

"We are happy that for the first time the Pan American Games are being held in our country and with our people," said Chilean weightlifter María Fernanda Valdés, who won under-87 kilograms gold at Lima 2019 and a silver medal in the under-90kg division at the 2017 World Championships.

"We will have the support of all Chileans in this event where great world and Olympic champions will surely be competing.

"I want to repeat my Lima 2019 gold medal and celebrate it with all of my people here in Chile.

"I also invite all athletes to our beautiful country, it will undoubtedly be a wonderful and unforgettable celebration for everyone."

Officials in the country have insisted Chile hosting the Pan American Games in 2023 is viable despite the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In January, Chile unveiled a budget of $507 million (£388 million/€456 million) for the Games – half of what it cost Lima to organise the same event in 2019.

A total of 38 sports are on the programme for Santiago 2023, set to conclude on November 5.
