Sergio Garcia, winner of The Masters in 2017, will not take part in this year's tournament after testing positive for COVID-19.

It will be the first time since 1999 that the Spaniard has missed a men's golf major.

Garcia tweeted that he had taken a coronavirus test after developing "a bit of a sore throat and a cough" following the Houston Open last week, where he missed the cut.

"The important thing is that my family and I are feeling good," he added.

"We’ll come back stronger and give the green jacket a go next April".

Garcia has twice failed to make the cut at Augusta National Golf Club since winning the title in 2017.

The 40-year-old has recorded 23 top-10 finishes at majors, winning just the one.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics, Garcia finished in a tie for eighth place.

Garcia is the second player to withdraw from The Masters due to a coronavirus diagnosis, following Chile's Joaquín Niemann.

Fifteen-time major winner Tiger Woods is the defending champion after he won his fifth green jacket in 2019.

The tournament in Georgia is due to run from November 12 to 15, being played in the American fall for the first time after it was postponed due to the pandemic.

No spectators will be allowed as part of the measures implemented to prevent the spread of the virus.

Two men's majors have been played already this year, with Americans Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau winning their first major titles.
