John_McEwenNovember 7 - Princess Haya, who has been re-elected as President of the FEI, has appointed Britain's John McEwen as her deputy.

McEwen, the director of sports science for the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), was unanimously voted in to support the Princess in running the world governing body of horse sport.

He replaces Sweden's Sven Holmberg as first vice-president, who had served under Princess Haya since 2006 but had stood unsuccessfully against her in this election.

Earlier McEwen had been re-elected as chairman of the Veterinary Committee, a post he has held since 1999.

"I was reluctant at first because it is a very real commitment," McEwen told Horse & Hound.

The decision to promote McEwen has been hailed as "very good for Great Britain" by BEF chief executive Andrew Finding.

"It's good that we can make a contribution to the work of the FEI," Finding said.

Pablo Mayorga from Argentina was elected second vice-president, replacing New Zealand's Chris Hodson who stated clearly last month that he would not stay on if Princess Haya was re-elected.

McEwen has been vet to the British show jumping team since 1978, and to the British dressage team since 1983.

Beijing was his sixth Olympic Games.
